5 Ways to Negotiate Lower Processing Rates with Stripe, Square, and PayPal
Most businesses don't realize their processing rates are negotiable. Here's exactly how to start that conversation.

Payment processors publish their standard rates publicly, but those are their list prices — not the only prices available. If your business processes enough volume, you have real negotiating power. Even a 0.2%–0.5% rate reduction can translate into thousands of dollars saved per year.
Before you contact anyone, pull your last 3 months of processing statements. Processors are much more responsive when you can say 'I processed $47,000 last month' than 'I process a lot.' Volume is your leverage — know the exact number.
Standard support agents cannot change your rates. You need to reach a dedicated Account Manager or the enterprise sales team. For Stripe, email enterprise@stripe.com. For Square and PayPal, ask the support agent to escalate to an account specialist.
Contact a competitor (or two) and get their custom quote in writing before you talk to your primary processor. Having a written offer from a competitor is the single most effective negotiating tool available to you.
Processors price risk. A business with a clean chargeback history and a consistent client base is a low-risk customer — and low-risk customers deserve lower rates. Mention your dispute rate explicitly during the negotiation.
Most businesses are on a flat-rate plan (2.9% + $0.30 on everything). Interchange-plus pricing passes through the actual interchange cost and adds a fixed markup. For businesses with mostly low-interchange cards (like debit or standard Visa), this can be significantly cheaper.
